Canyon Ferry Reservoir
Silos Recreation Area Framework Plan
Broadwater County, Montana
Canyon Ferry Reservoir is a 35,181-acre reservoir on the Missouri River, managed by the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR), located in Broadwater and Lewis and Clark Counties, Montana. The approximately 300-acre Silos Recreation Area, is on the west shoreline of the Reservoir on BOR lands managed, operated and maintained through a long-term agreement with the County for public recreation uses. Any development or changes in management must be consistent with the BOR Canyon Ferry Reservoir Resource Management Plan/Environmental Assessment (RMP). Silos Recreation Area is open all year providing camping, boating, fishing, ice fishing, ice boating, swimming, picnicking and day use activities.
The Silos Recreation Area Framework Plan is an early step in the planning process for the redevelopment of the existing Area. This Framework Plan was developed through a public and stakeholder process building upon conceptual thought over the past few years by Broadwater County, the Silos Users Group, and other user and stakeholder groups interested in long term improvements to this recreation area. Working with Broadwater County this planning process led the public, stakeholders, and County staff through a planning and design process, including a public survey, that culminated with the development of the Plan.
Proposed short term and long term goals for the Area’ redevelopment include: redevelop the area to a regional/statewide facility; improve/expand visitor recreational opportunities and experiences; improve/expand visitor services; promote/ enhance recreational safety; balance resource protection and conservation with recreation use and management, and; improve long term financial sustainability and management.
