Big Stump entrance

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park, CA

As subconsultant on an NPS Pacific West IDIQ Contract FiLL p.l.l.c.  principal Phil Hendricks Jr. ASLA led the planning and conceptual design for a major new Entrance Station, including State and Federal Highway Improvements.

In the winter of 2005, park managers began developing design alternatives for the environmental assessment that would address the operational shortcomings present at the entrance station. Before the process was complete, the station was closed when it was determined that all or part of a giant sequoia tree might fall into the existing entry station area.

The station is the main entrance to both Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks and to Giant Sequoia National Monument in the Sequoia National Forest.  The entrance station is the primary point of contact for more than 600,000 yearly visitors in over 180,000 vehicles. The project was developed over a 5-year period of time encompassing three task orders including Title I, II and III services including visioning and programming, concept planning, environmental analysis (EA) support, public and stakeholder meetings, value analysis local agency reviews and approvals and construction documents. An important aspect of the project was the development of architectural theme and materials to coordinate with the Parks historic features and setting.  The new entrance began operation in 2011.

FiLL p.l.l.c.  principal Phil Hendricks Jr. ASLA served as the: principal-in-charge, task order manager, lead planner and landscape architect while at a previous firm (EDAW/AECOM), as a subconsultant on a National Park Service (NPS) Pacific Region Architecture/Engineering Services IDIQ.
